Supported Sitting for Daily Participation

Protea provides an externally supported seated position for selected children who need assistance with trunk and pelvic alignment during learning, communication, play and prescribed rehabilitation activities.

The child's posture and support placement should be assessed individually.

Caregiver-Assisted Transition to Standing

The mechanical index-plunger system allows a trained caregiver to change the device from its sitting arrangement to its supported standing arrangement.

The manufacturer describes a roughly 10-second conversion, but the safe transition procedure depends on the child and the exact setup.

It is not a powered patient-lifting function.

Therapist-Prescribed Weight-Bearing Activities

When clinically appropriate, the standing configuration can be incorporated into a supervised standing programme.

A rehabilitation professional must specify the desired alignment, loading, duration and precautions.

Head, Trunk, Pelvic and Lower-Limb Positioning

The head support, chest harness, 2-point pelvic belt, adjustable knee supports and foot platform offer positioning options during appropriately fitted sitting and standing activities.

Correct strap pressure and joint alignment are essential.

Learning, Communication and Play

The included removable birch-wood tray can provide a stable activity surface for selected books, drawing, communication tools and supervised therapy tasks, with the child positioned correctly.

Feeding-Related Activities

Seated feeding may be considered only when the child's posture and swallowing needs have been reviewed by the appropriate clinical team.

The existence of a tray or seating support does not establish swallowing safety.

Home, School and Clinical Programmes

After fitting and caregiver training, Protea may be used in suitable homes, special schools, rehabilitation centres and therapy clinics on firm, level indoor surfaces.

Expected Outcome

The immediate purpose is access to two supported postural configurations and increased opportunity for supervised daily activities.

No particular change in independent standing, walking, bone density or long-term posture is guaranteed.

Who May Be Suitable

• Children approximately 6–15 years old who need significant external postural support for sitting and prescribed standing.
• Selected children with cerebral palsy (including some GMFCS IV–V users), developmental delay, spina bifida or neuromuscular conditions following clinical assessment.
• Children with body weight up to the confirmed 80 kg maximum, provided that seat, back, head, chest, pelvic, knee and foot supports fit safely.
• Families and institutions needing supported sitting and standing in a single non-electric positioning device.

Who May Need Another Solution

• A child who needs a gradual electrically controlled tilt from lying to standing may need a supine standing frame such as Peony.
• A child who only needs fixed upright positioning may be better served by a dedicated stander such as i-Stand Nova or Veronica.
• A child who needs supported walking rather than stationary positioning requires a suitable gait trainer.
• A child requiring wheelchair travel or patient lifting needs equipment specifically intended and approved for those purposes.
• Children whose body dimensions do not fit the published 14 × 10-inch seat and associated supports should not be selected on weight rating alone.

Selection Guidance

Protea should be selected because the child needs both supported seating and supported standing, and the manual transition procedure is appropriate for that child's handling plan.

A qualified physiotherapist or occupational therapist should approve the selected configuration.

Before Every Session

• Confirm the child's weight is 80 kg or less and that body dimensions, joint positions and postural support needs fit the configured equipment.
• Follow the child's therapist-prescribed sitting and standing plan and confirm the transfer method and number of caregivers required.
• Inspect the mild-steel frame, welds, index-plunger lock, adjustment points, chest harness, pelvic belt, knee supports, foot platform, straps, tray and castors.
• Position the frame on a firm, stable, level indoor floor and lock all provided castors before transfers, adjustment or stationary use.
• Adjust and secure the head, trunk, pelvic, knee and foot supports before beginning the standing transition.

During the Manual Sit-to-Stand Transition

• Use the exact manufacturer-approved handling procedure; the moving structure must be supported and controlled throughout the transition.
• Check that the index-plunger mechanism is fully engaged in the intended position and that there is no unexpected movement before allowing the child to remain in it.
• Never release or disengage the standing lock under unsupported load.
• Keep hands, clothing and medical tubing clear of moving joints and pinch points.
• The published approximately 10-second conversion time is descriptive, not a target that overrides careful handling.
• Although one caregiver may operate the mechanism in some circumstances, the safe number of caregivers for a particular child depends on individual handling assessment.

During Sitting or Standing

• Supervise the child throughout; do not leave a child unattended in the equipment.
• Inspect body alignment, head position, breathing, strap pressure, skin contact, lower-limb positioning and signs of pain, fatigue or distress.
• Stop use if there is instability, discomfort, a loose support or locking problem.
• Use the removable activity tray for approved supervised activities; never use it as a lifting or patient-support component.
• Feeding requires individually approved postural and swallowing guidance.
• Do not use Protea as a wheelchair, gait trainer, patient transfer hoist or independent mobility aid.

Cleaning, Maintenance and Storage

• Wipe the powder-coated frame with a soft damp cloth.
• Clean PU foam and medical-grade rexine upholstery with mild soap and water, then dry all surfaces fully.
• Avoid bleach, solvents, abrasive cleaners and excessive moisture.
• Check the mechanical index-plunger, adjustment knobs, fasteners, straps and wheel locks routinely; discontinue use if worn or damaged.
• Only use genuine Morecare replacement components and approved servicing procedures.
• Store indoors in a clean dry location out of prolonged direct sunlight.
• Preventive inspection is recommended at least annually, or sooner as use and condition require.
• The published 5–7-year estimated product life is not the same as the 12-month warranty.

Important Safety Limitation

The 80 kg confirmed maximum user weight is the equipment user-capacity limit.

Do not interpret it as a guarantee of safe fit, safe manual caregiver lifting or medical suitability for all users up to 80 kg.
